Financial Benefits for TSP Graduate Students

The TAMU Graduate Transportation Scholars Program provides financial support to graduate students through several mechanisms as described below. The total value of financial benefits can range from $37000 to $43000 for a M.S. student and $84000 to $99,000 for a Ph.D. student. Students may participate in the TSP for a maximum of 15½ months for an M.S. student and 36 months for a Ph.D. student.

Tuition

Students accepted into the TSP will have their tuition paid during the time that they are participating in the program up to a maximum limit of credit hours. The program will pay up to 34 hours for an M.S. student and up to 64 hours for a Ph.D. student. The value of the tuition is about $4700 per year. Fees

Students accepted into the TSP will have selected fees paid as part of the program during the time that they are participating in the program. The amount of the fees will vary depending upon several factors, such as the courses taken, lab fees, and other factors. The value of the fees is about $2800 per year. The table below summarizes the total value of tuition for M.S. and Ph.D. students over the course of their academic career.

Fellowship

Students accepted into the TSP will receive a monthly fellowship (in addition to the research stipend) of up to $600/month. The amount of fellowship stipend ranges between $200 and $600 per month depending upon a student's qualifications (including the student's GRE and GPA). The value of the fellowship ranges from $2400 to $7200 per year. The table below summarizes the total value of the fellowship for M.S. and Ph.D. students over the course of their academic career.

Research Stipend

Students accepted into the TSP also are provided with a research assistantship position with the Texas Transportation Institute or Texas A&M University. This funding is external to the TSP. This position requires that they work 20 hours/week on a research project, which normally provides the subject matter for the thesis or dissertation. TSP students receive a research stipend of $1500 (M.S.) or $1600 (Ph.D.) per month. The value of the research stipend is about $18000 per year for M.S. students and $19200 for Ph.D. students. Health Insurance

Low-cost comprehensive health insurance plan is available to students as part of their research assistantship position. The majority of the premium is paid by the University.

Travel Allowance

TSP students are eligible for reimbursement of qualified travel expenses for travel to the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting in Washington , D.C. in January each year. Travel expenses are reimbursed in accordance with TSP and Texas A&M University travel policies.
